There are many more reasons then just 5, but this is where I will start.
I am currently wrapping up my journey abroad, and am practicing my Yogic breathing as the pre-flight anxiety kicks in (24 hrs of flying, to be exact) .
This trip to South Africa has been beautiful, emotional and humbling. From the views, the foods, to reconnecting with family and understanding my roots; it is safe to say it has been anything but dull.
Here are 5 Reasons why Cape Town stole my heart, and will surely do the same to you.
The Mountains. Not just Table Mountain- but all the peaks and mountains behind it known as the 12 Apostles. They are immense, majestic, and you can see them (especially Table) from almost anywhere in and around Cape Town. I think I have about a thousand pictures of it, and still I can sit in silence and admire it for hours on end.
The Colors. Those of the houses, and the many faces of the people here. Needless to say there is quite a lot of history (which I will not even attempt to go into here), and you can feel it all around you. As to the buildings, even the new houses being built under the RDP Housing Plan (An affordable housing system installed by Nelson Mandela- a slow process to say the least) are colorful and vibrant.
The Food. Meats, Fish, Vegetables, Fruit- they got it it all. For me, the best part of it are all the Indian and Middle Eastern influenced spices that come up frequently in the stews. The most important thing to know is that if Sunday's look like a ghost town, it is because everyone is at home lighting their fire for a weekly Braai (BBQ). Furthermore, South Africa is on the bandwagon for healthy cafes- which I of course set out to find- serving many options for various dietary preferences.
The Wine. This is very important, amiright?! I mean why would you want to be anywhere with bad wine? Life is too short. Although I have come to terms with the fact that Pinotage is not for me, I genuinely enjoy the Shiraz from Stellenbosch, the cool climate Pinot Noirs near the Klein Karoo and of course, the Cap Classic (Bubbles always win).
The Activities. I saved the best for last because Cape Town is truly heaven on earth for any active, outdoor enthusiast. From Mountain Biking and Hiking, to Climbing and Kitesurfing, you will NEVER be bored. The beach runs are to die for, the waves are perfect for all levels (choose your break wisely!), and the water is a magnificent shade of light blue. There is so much more to say here- but it will be for another time. All you need to know is that you will definitely find a million ways to get your dose of African Sun (WEAR SUNBLOCK).
Cape Town, your are a beautiful city with rough edges, and deserve to be recognized around the world as one of the most amazing places to visit.
A big thank you to my Family, especially Lucinda, Garry and Stephen, for welcoming me with open arms and showing me around my father's past.
I will be back without a doubt- because my "to-do" list is now even longer then the one I originally arrived with.
